STATEMENT OF NEEDS Multiple sclerosis (MS) presents numerous challenges to health care providers and patients, whose shared goal is to minimize functional impairment and improve quality of life. Educating physicians about treatment options by comparing the efficacy and safety of available agents will help improve clinical outcomes. Clinicians should also explore any issues that may contribute to poor adherence to therapy, including depression, other comorbidities, or problems with adverse effects. In addition to targeting the disease process, the treatment of MS involves managing symptoms such as bowel and bladder problems, cognitive and mood disorders, and motor weakness and spasticity. It is also critical for patients to have realistic expectations as to treatment outcomes. Educating health care professionals about available therapeutic options and effective strategies for managing MS symptoms, using the most current clinical data, will further clinicians' understanding of this debilitating disease and improve patient care.
CME INFORMATION Educational Objectives - Correctly diagnose MS based on interpreting magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings, the current McDonald criteria, and other diagnostic criteria
- Initiate early pharmacologic intervention in symptomatic and asymptomatic patients with MS, based on clinical trial reports of efficacy, safety, and delay in disability progression
- Apply current evidence regarding MS drug treatments to select appropriate therapy to treat patients who experience a relapse, based on an understanding of their various benefits and risks
Audience This activity is designed for neurologists and other health care professionals who treat patients with MS or suspected MS. There are no prerequisites for participation in this activity.
