This workshop will explore the dynamics of burden and discuss effective strategies to reduce the impact of caregiver burden. Bibliography Donna Fry, PT, PhD, Toni Chiara, PT, PhD This session includes a review of respiratory muscle control of breathing followed by instruction on how to assess respiratory muscle function (including a 15 min hands-on session to practice with assessment equipment). This will be followed by a presentation on respiratory muscle training with a second hands-on breakout session to practice using respiratory muscle trainers. The session will conclude with specific recommendations for assessment and treatment of respiratory muscle weakness. Goal: participants will be able to set up a respiratory function / respiratory muscle assessment and training program at their facility. Level: Intermediate - Management of Elimination Dysfunction
Marie Namey, RN, MSN, MSCN Impairments in bladder and bowel function with MS are common and affect many patients during the course of the disease. These symptoms which affect quality of life can be treated successfully. Goals for bladder and bowel management include maximizing independence for the patient and preventing incontinence and complications. This workshop will explore initial and innovative interventions for bladder management as well as basic interventions for bowel management. Level: Basic and Intermediate

Working with a patient population that lives with a chronic unpredictable illness for which there is both anticipated and real losses can pose challenges for the health care professional. The importance of maintaining our own wellness as health care providers within this challenging field should be acknowledged and nurtured. The objectives of this session will be: 1) Participants will explore their personal stress response mechanisms. 2) Participants will identify their current coping mechanisms for dealing with work related stressors. 3) Participants will explore new coping mechanisms for dealing with work related stress. These objectives will be met through an interactive presentation that will allow for group discussion and a review of literature related to Personal Hardiness and Resilience in dealing with work related stress. Maria C. Milazzo, RN, CPNP Pediatric Multiple Sclerosis is an entity that has received increasing attention in recent years. Up to five percent of MS diagnoses involve youngsters to age 18 with estimates ranging from 10,000-15,000 children with this condition in the United States. This workshop will review the diagnosis of Pediatric MS as well as common differential diagnoses using case studies. The psychiatric issues in Pediatric MS will be discussed, using case studies to demonstrate the use of a targeted interview and self-report inventories for children and families. Particularly important is the overall care of the child with MS; family support, educational interventions, psychosocial and supportive care will be discussed. Level: Intermediate - Sexuality in MS
Sardar A. Khan, MD This workshop will addresses the impact of MS on female and male sexual dysfunction. Workshop will review the basic sciences related to male and female sexual dysfunction. Will discuss the pathogenesis of common neurological disorders including MS on the neurovascular pathways of sexual function. Treatment options of male and female sexual dysfunction in patients with MS will be reviewed. This workshop will be interactive with audience participation. Robert T. Fraser, PhD, CRC Medical professional can ill advise patients with multiple sclerosis or the decision not to work. This presentation will review both the barriers to working and effective strategies to continue to work within the context of receiving federal/insurance subsidy. A major emphasis of the presentation will be the use of motivational interviewing and employment web-based resources as utilized by the University of Washington MS Rehabilitation Research and Training Center.

Clinical Bulletin Marion Brandis, MA, RN, BSN A very interactive workshop drawing on multiple sclerosis expertise from participants, focused on “upstreaming” palliative care in MS. The workshop will feature discussion about timing and setting for palliative care interventions, small-group problem-solving regarding intensive symptom management in progressed patients, and an activity around MS hospice eligibility guidelines. Level: Intermediate - MS Advocacy - What is in the Works and What is on the Horizon
Shawn O’Neail Legislative initiatives to advance issues important to the MS community have made great strides in recent years. This workshop will outline accomplishments in the federal legislative arena and what is currently in the Congressional pipeline. From research funding to legislation to provide a national MS registry, the MS community has made a big impact on Capitol Hill and looks to do much more over the next few years. Shawn will cover the general political tone in Washington, the prospect of several bills of interest and what the professional community can do to help ensure success on the legislative front.
