Editorial Review
Multiple Sclerosis is a much overlooked and misunderstood illnesss.
Yet, it is the most common serious neurological disorder amongst young adults.
Unknown to many, only about 30 percent of those diagnosed become severely disabled
by the disorder and require a wheelchair for mobility over time.
It is the other 70 percent of the MS population, which this 85-minute video
documentary focuses upon. Those individuals who "look so well" to
the outside world, yet suffer from such "invisible" symptoms as pain,
numbness, fatigue, depression, vision and cognitive problems.
In 2001, our first MS documentary, "But You Look So Well.." was released.
This program revisits the lives of three individuals with MS and their families
who participated in the project. It reveals how these individuals and families
have learned to cope and live with MS over time. The average period of diagnosis
for participants is ten years. However, many have suffered from the symptoms
for years before they were officially diagnosed.
This documentary portrays poignantly and in depth the emotional, social and
physical challenges of MS on the personal and working lives of the participants.
They speak openly about the difficult period when they were first diagnosed
as well as how they have learned through the years to both live and thrive with
MS. They also share what helps them to cope on a daily basis with this unpredictable
disorder.
"What is MS?" and "MS Medications" are also important topic
addressed in this program. Dr. Robert Lisak, MD, a Michicagan neurologist, known
internationally for his work with MS as well as an MS nurse specialist bring
their professional expertise and knowledge to this project. Additional topics
covered include, among other things, MS & pregnancy, MS & children,
disclosure and alternative medicine. Information, programs and services available
through the National MS Society are also presented.
This documentary is a production of GL Productions. It was Produced/Directed/
Edited by Audrey Geyer and Kevin Lindenmuth. Copyright 2005.
