Review: Cathy Chester
The unique approach used in The LIFE Program for MS is for newly diagnosed patients as well as MS veterans. This easy-to-understand book deals with the unique and troubling limitations imposed by this unpredictable disease. Ms Epstein provides a unique approach to living with MS through diet, exercise and tips for daily living.
If I had to choose one word that adequately describes the focus of this book, it would be WELLNESS. The program targets the limitations caused by MS – namely, fatigue, weakness and depression, which forces patients to face a more sedentary lifestyle. This, in turn, may cause weight gain and poor exercise habits. The LIFE program offers ways to incorporate new behaviors into daily routines, enabling a healthier lifestyle in both mind and body. This, in turn, may reduce the risk of secondary illnesses such as cancer, stroke and heart disease. Useful tips on managing weight, healthy eating, and conserving mental and physical fatigue are offered throughout the book.
Ms. Epstein’s athletic background and work in the Jacobs Neurological Institute in Buffalo, New York helps her recognize not only the importance of healthy daily living, but the importance of a support system of coaches. Family and friends may be key factors in motivating and reinforcing healthy habits. Ms. Epstein finds equal importance in making readers aware of the unpredictable nature of MS and how that may affect behavioral outcomes, whether it is self-awareness, family, vocation or environment.
