Our Director

Tim VollmerDr. Timothy L. Vollmer, MD first served as NARCOMS Program Director from 1993 to 2004 and resumed his leadership role in the program in 2007. During the early years of the program Dr. Vollmer was a faculty member at Yale School of Medicine, where he was Vice Chairman of the Department of Neurology and Director of the Yale MS Research Program. In 1992 he was appointed Chairman of the Division of Neurology at Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona and served as Director of the Neuroimmunology Program at Barrow’s for more than 6 years. In 2008 Dr. Vollmer accepted an academic position at University of Colorado, Denver, as a professor of neurology and currently also serves as the Medical Director of Rocky Mountain MS Center and the Co-Director of Rocky Mountain MS Clinic Anschutz Medical Center. He continues to be actively involved in both clinical practice and clinical research.

Dr. Vollmer, who specializes in neuroimmunology, has written articles for such journals as Neurology, Archives of Neurology, and Multiple Sclerosis and has authored book chapters on demyelinating disorders of the central nervous system and molecular and cellular approaches to neurological disease treatment. He is a member of the National Professional Advisory Committee of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and member of the Arizona NMSS Chapter Professional Advisory Committee. He is also a member of the Barrow Foundation Board and the CMSC Board of Directors. Dr. Vollmer is a member of the American Academy of Neurology, the American Association of Immunology, The Society for Neuroscience, The International Society for Neuroimmunology, the American Neurologic Society, and The Royal Society of Medicine.

Dr. Vollmer received his Bachelor of Arts degree with highest honors from the University of Wyoming in 1977 and his Medical Degree from Stanford University, Stanford, California in 1982. He completed his internship in internal medicine at Yale-New Haven Hospital in 1983 and his residency in neurology and postdoctoral fellowship in neuroimmunology at Stanford University Hospital in 1988.

Denise Campagnolo
Dr. Denise Campagnolo, MD has been actively engaged with the NARCOMS program since July 2004 and currently serves as one of the Principal Investigators for the NARCOMS project at Barrow Neurological Institute. Dr. Campagnolo is also the Editor in Chief of the MSQR publication, a position that she originally assumed in 2005 – 2007 while NARCOMS Program Director. Dr. Campagnolo graduated from Ohio State College of Medicine 1988. She completed her Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) residency at New Jersey Medical School (NJMS) followed by a research fellowship during which she earned her Masters of Science in Neurosciences at UMDNJ-Graduate School of biomedical Sciences. Following the fellowship she accepted a faculty appointment in the Department of PM&R at NJMS, where she served as Associate Professor and Head of Electromyography for the Peripheral Nerve Center of N.J. She has co-edited a major text book in the area of Spinal Cord Injury Medicine. She received NIH funding in the form of a K24 award examining immunological changes after spinal cord injury and multiple sclerosis. In July 2004 the Barrow Neurology Institute in Phoenix, Arizona was honored to have her join its neurology program. Dr. Campagnolo has demonstrated keen insight into potential for development and the investigative opportunities that the NARCOMS database provides. Her current clinical practice is restricted to MS and related diseases. Director of Clinical MS Research at Barrow Neurological Institute and Interim Director of the Neuroimmunology Program, Dr. Campagnolo is an investigator and co-investigator in over 20 clinical trials on Multiple Sclerosis
