CME-certified online learning program on Pseudobulbar Affect (PBA)
A Continuing Medical Education
Purpose:
This educational activity will provide physicians and healthcare professionals
with an understanding of and update on pseudobulbar affect (PBA) and emotional
lability in neurodegenerative diseases. This disorder affects a diverse population
of patients with psychiatric and neurological disorders, including ALS, MS,
Alzheimer"s, Parkinson"s and neuronal damage following stroke or trauma. The
pathophysiology of PBA is not well understood and patients are often misdiagnosed.
While the underlying etiology varies from patient to patient, clinical presentations
are categorized by uncontrolled and inappropriate emotional outbursts and responses
to various stimuli.
Description of Course: Expert researchers and clinicians will
present current information about the epidemiology, pathophysiology, differential
diagnosis, and recommended clinical management of PBA, as well as future developments
in the treatment of PBA and emotional lability in patients with neurodegenerative
diseases.
This educational activity is supported by an educational grant from Avanir
Pharmaceuticals.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this program, participants
should be able to: " Recognize Pseudobulbar Affect as a distinct disease manifestation
frequently present in a variety of neurological disorders " Review the differential

damage in a variety of neurologic disorders " Discuss pathologic correlates
of behavioral alterations across neurodegenerative disorders
