JUNE HALPER, MSN, ANP, FAAN

Executive Director, CMSC

June Halper is a certified adult nurse practitioner who has specialized in multiple sclerosis since 1978. She was a founder of the Gimbel MS Center in Teaneck, NJ and has been the Executive Director since 1989. In 1993, the Gimbel MS Center was named the administrative seat of the Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers, the largest organization of MS healthcare professionals in the world. Ms. Halper was president of the CMSC from 1995-97 and has been the Executive Director since 1997.

Ms. Halper has published and lectured extensively on multiple sclerosis and its ramifications and is the editor of Comprehensive Nursing Care in Multiple Sclerosis and Advanced Concepts in Nursing Care in Multiple Sclerosis, and co-editor of Staying Well with Multiple Sclerosis: A Self-Care Guide. Ms. Halper chaired the first Multiple Sclerosis Nurse Specialist Consensus Committee"s development of a monograph on the nurse"s role in adherence to complex protocols; the impact of cognitive impairment in MS nursing care; and the nurse"s role in patient"s and family"s quality of life. She chaired the second such committee which published Multiple Sclerosis: Best Practices in Nursing Care, Disease Management, Pharmacologic Treatment, Nursing Research. She is a member of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, the founding director of IOMSN, the International Organization of MS Nurses, and the recipient of the IOMSN"s first June Halper Award for Excellence in Nursing in Multiple Sclerosis. She was inducted as a Fellow into the American Academy of Nursing in November 1999.

Co-Author

Dr. Diana M. Schneider trained as a neurochemist at the UCLA Brain Research Institute, where she received her Ph.D. degree in 1970. She has been in medical publishing for over 25 years, initially with Raven Press and, since 1985, with Demos Medical Publishing. Her major areas of interest in publishing have been neurology, rehabilitation, and patient education.

Cira Fraser
Dr. Cira Fraser will discuss the breadth and scope of journal publishing in the field of nursing, and opportunities for MS nurses to contribute to the nursing literature.
Dr. Fraser is on the graduate faculty of the school of nursing at Monmouth University in Long Branch, NJ, and maintains a clinical practice at the Maimonides MS Care Center in Brooklyn NY. She has over 30 years experience in nursing and is certified as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Medical Surgical Nursing. She has extensive experience in the area of how to conduct nursing research in MS. She has published widely in the nursing literature, in both US-based and international journals.

Sue Forwell
Susan Forwell will talk to us about the opportunities for journal publication in the field of occupational therapy. She is a faculty member in the Division of Occupational Therapy at the University of British Columbia. She has a longstanding interest and expertise in OT for people with MS, and has written numerous journal articles and book chapters, and has published a book on topics that range from the neurorehabilitation of adults with acquired diseases such as MS to professional practice issues of reflective reasoning, cultural competency, and the disease experience.

Angela Chan
Angela Chan is the specialist physical therapist for the Multiple Sclerosis Clinic at St. Michael"s Hospital in Toronto, Canada. Since 1980, she has been providing consultations and management strategies for patients of the MS Clinic. Her publications include papers on management of MS, outcomes from the prescription of wheelchairs with tilt and measuring patient satisfaction.
