Making Your Home Accessible with Assistive Devices
Cindy Miller, RN/Case Manager; Cindy Gackle, OTR/L, MSCS; Julee Quarve-Peterson, Accessibility Specialist

Cindy Miller, RN/Case Manager
Cindy worked as a Registered Nurse in Hospice and Home Care. From 1986 until her retirement on medical disability in 2001, she worked as an RN/Case Manager for a large major medical insurer. She specialized in DME and in her State’s Safety-net Insurance Plan for those who are rejected by traditional health insurance. She has much to contribute and joins forces on a regular basis with other professionals in the field of MS rehabilitation.She was diagnosed with MS in 1986. Cindy was fully ambulatory from 1986 - 1998. From 1988 her MS has progressed from using a cane, to crutches, to walker and part-time wheelchair. As of the presentation in March 2004, Cindy was using her power wheelchair nearly fulltime. Along with the progression of her MS, Cindy and her husband moved from a two-story home, to a one-story rambler in 2000.

Cindy Gackle, OTR/L, MSCS, Fairview Health Services, Minneapolis, MN
Cindy is a staff occupational therapist at Fairview-University Medical Center. She received her bachelor"s degree in Occupational Therapy from the University of North Dakota in 1979. She has worked in a variety of health care settings including long-term care, home health, acute care and rehabilitation, and outpatient treatment. Since joining Fairview in 1997, she has developed an expertise with multiple sclerosis, working with Dr. Randall Schapiro"s team, of the Schapiro Center for Multiple Sclerosis (formerly known as the Fairview MS Center). In August of 2004, she received her certification as a Multiple Sclerosis Certified Specialist (MSCS).

Julee Quarve-Peterson, Accessibility Specialist, JQP, Inc.
Julee Quarve-Peterson, Inc. (JQP, Inc.) was founded in 1985 and has been involved exclusively in accessibility since 1979. Starting with an undergraduate paper (Housing Minnesota’s Handicapped”, her work efforts led from a non-profit national developer that designs, builds and manages independent living units for young adults with disabilities, to the Minnesota State Council on Disabilities as an accessibility specialist, and then formed the small, woman-owned consulting firm of JQP, Inc. in 1985.

Julee focuses on clients requiring assistance in performing self evaluations, facilities, and transition planning related to accessibility. JQP, Inc. has enjoyed national experience in accessibility ranging from site surveys, reports, product information, training seminars and formal presentation. Clients include San Francisco Maritime Museum, Central Florida Schools, Honeywell Corporation (nationwide), Mayo Foundation (medical in Minnesota and Arizona), and Plaza Las Americas Shopping Mall in San Juan Puerto Rico. She has received an overwhelming positive response from her clients with her easy-to-understand and realistic approach to massive complex projects without compromising the intent of the ADA and other accessibility laws, and meeting individual accessibility needs.
