NEW DISCUSSION FORUM
Representatives of the IOMSRT are pleased to announce a new discussion forum geared towards rehab professionals. It is our hope that this forum with facilitate conversations and learning experiences for all members. Please feel free to post any patient questions (using HIPPA guidelines please), research questions or respond to any previous posts. Content will be screened for appropriateness prior to posting. Of course, our goal is always to provide the best quality care we can to our patients, and collaborating with other professionals with new and different ideas can only help our cause!

CMSC IOMSRT REHAB FELLOWSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT

The International Organization of MS Rehabilitation Therapists is pleased to announce that Acorda Therapeutics has awarded the Foundation of the CMSC a second year of funding to support the MS Rehabilitation Fellowship Program. Last year, six rehabilitation therapists were provided the opportunity to complete a week-long fellowship training at three CMSC Comprehensive MS Centers.

With the second year of support by Acorda Therapeutics, we are now reaching out to invite new sites for the fellowship and, of course, rehabilitation therapists interested in participating in the fellowship program.

Criteria for Site Selection as a Training Center for Rehabilitation Therapists
The following criteria were identified by the Fellowship Committee:
  • Identified as a CMSC Comprehensive Care MS Center or inclusion of comprehensive MS team
    • Identify members of the comprehensive team with identification of referrals and how the whole team works together
    • Levels of communication within the team regarding patient management
  • Site Coordinator at the Center - should be active in the CMSC
  • Availability of administrative support to assist Fellows:
    • Professional Events Solutions, Kelly Sallinger, to arrange travel logistics ( )
    • Availability of lodging, transportation at the mentorship site
    • Process in place for related expenses, administering funds and receiving a stipend for program coordination.

If you are interested in being considered as a training site or want to recommend an MS Center for the 2010 Rehab Fellowship program please contact Joy Sprenger, Executive Assistant to June Halper at the CMSC. ( )


Fellowship Candidate Selection:
The following criteria were identified by the MS Rehabilitation Fellowship Committee for candidate selection:
  • Licensed to practice in your profession in the state/province
  • Active in a rehabilitation clinic with emphasis in MS
  • Desire to expand programs and knowledge in MS
  • Networking and knowledge about MS organizations in your community that promote programs for patients with MS
  • Member of CMSC - $100.00 for individual membership
  • Preferably 1 year experience in MS, or demonstration of objectives that define a specific learning experience
  • Identified goals for professional development in MS


Individuals interested in applying for the Fellowship program should contact Joy Sprenger ( ) at the CMSC.

Overview of Program Content that would be offered by the CMSC MS Center providing the Fellowship training program [in bold required content]:
  • Medical management in MS - neurological and nursing care
  • Neuropsychological evaluation and follow-up
  • Exposure to psychosocial services
  • Social work role in comprehensive care
  • Treatment of affective disorders
  • Wellness services or referral for health promotion
  • MS-Specific rehabilitation programs
    • 60 minute overview for each discipline - basics to advanced as identified by the fellows prior to the site visit [3 hrs]
    • Patient interaction
  • Active clinical research programs [discussion and/or participation in ongoing program]
  • Exposure to seating and mobility clinics
  • Spasticity interventions
  • Pain services
  • Pulmonary services
  • Sleep programs

The IOMSRT would like to thank Acorda Therapeutics for its educational grant support that has allowed the establishment of the MS Rehabilitation Web site. This new Web site will address the need for a professional resource focused on MS rehabilitation by housing in one online location state-of the-art information on clinical care and research.
