The mission of the Center is to enhance the quality of life of individuals diagnosed with multiple sclerosis through education, support, and advocacy. Because MS has a wide range of symptoms and is progressive in nature, it is important to not only ensure the quality of life of individuals with MS, but to also maximize it, by addressing all the parts of an individual's humanity through a comprehensive approach.
Louisville Comprehensive Care MS Center, Inc. specifically focuses its work in the following areas:
- Knowledge and understanding through education. Educate patients, families and the medical community about treatment options, emerging research, management tactics, and other topics through the use of educational programs, lending library, and an informational website.
- Emotional well being through counseling. Promote and support effective coping, problem solving, and planning for patients and their families by facilitating appropriate mental health counseling and support groups.
- Physical well being through exercise and nutrition. Advance the importance of exercise and nutrition as an essential component of overall health.
- Empowerment through effective case management. Find solutions and/or alternatives to daily challenges through hands-on support with social services, including: insurance matters, financial considerations, and legal needs.
- Patient's rights through advocacy and activism. Represents the MS community in key issues that directly impact their lives and advocate for them at local, state, and national levels.
The five focus areas are addressed through monthly community-based educational seminars; accredited MS-related educational seminars for healthcare professionals; in-house counseling, including individual, couples, and family counseling; professionally-led support groups; a registered and licensed dietitan offering quartely educational programs; year round exercise programs (aqua aerobics, tai chi, and yoga); in-house social work and advocacy; lending library and internet access for research; a variety of therapeutic workshops; and family social events. All services and programs are free of charge to the individual with MS and his or her family.
