Maryland Center for Multiple Sclerosis Print E-mail

Dr. Kenneth Johnson founded the Maryland Center for Multiple Sclerosis in 1981. It is part of the Department of Neurology within the School of Medicine at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. The Center has grown and developed over the past 21 years into a leader for basic research, clinical trials and clinical care. The mission of the Maryland Center is to provide the highest level of diagnosis and long-term care for individuals with MS. The Center currently cares for over 2000 patients.

The Maryland Center is staffed by 5 neurologists, 4 nurses, 1 research assistant and numerous rehabilitation specialists. Patients and family members are initially evaluated in the ambulatory neurology clinic. There they can receive physician evaluations, nursing education, physical therapy, IV therapy and can participate in clinical trial programs. Those patients with rehabilitation needs are referred to the MS programs located in our rehabilitation facility, Kernan Hospital. There, patients can receive services of physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, orthotics, seating evaluation and spasticity management. The MS Day Program, funded by a local philanthropic group, operates in the rehabilitation facility and provides a free recreation and exercise program four days/week.

Current Clinical trials include:
-Promise- Copaxone® in primary progressive patients
-Beta-Imuran®- Betaseron®/Imuran® combination trial
-Avonex® or Copaxone® and Novantrone® combination trial
-Copaxone® Open label extension trial
