Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease of the central nervous system that affects
roughly one in every 1,000 Americans. Now, there's a place you can go for comprehensive,
state-of-the-art treatment and care, without traveling far from home. That place
is the MeritCare Multiple Sclerosis Center in Fargo, North Dakota.
National Recognition
The MeritCare Multiple Sclerosis Center is partnering with the National Multiple
Sclerosis Society to become the first MS Center in North Dakota. In order to
achieve this status, a facility must have a commitment to research, meet strict
guidelines, adhere to the highest standards and provide a full range of services
for people with this disease.
Personal
Care
Since multiple sclerosis affects different people in different ways and
to varying degrees, our coordinated, multidisciplinary approach focuses
on providing each patient with treatments and therapies geared specifically
to their individual needs.
Specialized
Care
Care begins with a visit to one of our neurologists - who evaluate and
treat their patients on an individual, case-by-case basis. And as an MS
Center when the need arises we can refer to any number of other medical
specialists including:
Neuropsychologists
Physical
Medicine and Rehabilitation
Ophthalmologists
Urologists
Primary
care physicians
Nutritionists
MeritCare
has three neurologists specializing in MS care. Dr Bret Haake, Dr.
Karen Garnaas and director of the MS Center at MeritCare Dr. Susan
Scarberry.
In addition to the 3 neurologists David Tullar, PA-C is also available
to treat and care for patients with MS.
Therapies
Patients may also take part in various therapies, including:
Physical therapy
Occupational therapy
Cognitive therapy
Speech therapy
You should also know that MeritCare values the special relationship between patients
and their hometown medical providers. Whenever possible referrals are made back
to the home area.

Research is a vital component to improving MS care. We take part in a variety
