  1. Donald Paty Lecture
Life is Short, the Act is Long, Opportunity Fleeting, Experience Delusive, Judgment Difficult: The History of MS Diagnosis
    Jock Murray, MD
The struggle for accuracy in the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis has been a challenge since Charcot’s description in 1868. For over a century and a half attempts have been made to refine definitions, develop diagnostic and prognostic tests and surrogate markers for the disease. This lecture will trace the history of the search.
    Level: Intermediate
  2. CMSC/ACTRIMS Lecture
MRI and Our Understanding of MS
    Jerry S. Wolinsky, MD
The first magnetic resonance images of patients with multiple sclerosis appeared in the neurologic literature twenty five years ago. The literature has since exploded, at least in part based on the improved utility and versatility of this imaging approach. MRI has provided insights into the dynamic and multifaceted nature of the underlying pathologic processes of multiple sclerosis that had escaped prior imaging approaches and even the most seasoned of practitioners. This presentation will cover both the advances made and the challenges that lie ahead.
    Level: Intermediate
  3. John Whitaker Lecture
    Immunopathogenesis of MS
    Michael Racke, MD
This lecture will focus on some of the recent advances in our understanding of the immune response in multiple sclerosis, particularly with emphasis on recent findings from immunological studies on patients with MS in the context of immunomodulatory therapies.
    Level: Intermediate
  4. CMSC Lecture
    Multiple Sclerosis: The Big Questions
    Richard Rudick, MD
This lecture will highlight the major questions facing the multiple sclerosis field and point toward research approaches for the future.
    Level: Intermediate
  5. Fundamentals
Fundamentals of Multiple Sclerosis Care and Management: Diagnosis to Rehabilitation
Constance B. Easterling, MSN, ARNP, MSCN
Fundamentals of MS Care and Management: Diagnosis to Rehabilitation offers a multidisciplinary approach to the assessment and management of multiple sclerosis. A comprehensive overview of MS will be presented to include epidemiology, immunopathophysiology, current diagnostic criteria, and common symptoms. Current and future treatment options and management of relapses will be offered. Both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic methods of managing MS symptoms and disease progression will be discussed. Psychosocial and vocational issues, adherence and patient empowerment will offer participants insight into patient and family perspectives. This seminar will prepare candidates for the certification examination.
    Level: Basic
  6. Basic Nursing Practice
    Carol Saunders, BSN, BA, MSCN
This is a sharing of what MS nurses do and how they do what they do in varied practice settings. It is for nurses without a lot of experience in MS nursing and nurses who want to share their experiences and enhance what they do with new ideas.
    Level: Basic
  7. Advanced Practice Nursing in MS
    Kathleen Costello, MS, CRNP, MSCN
Multiple sclerosis presents many diagnostic challenges to health care providers. A major challenge is to make the correct diagnosis. This is not only the initial diagnosis of MS, but includes the correct diagnosis of symptoms so that the appropriate management strategies can be initiated. This symposium will look at various diagnoses in multiple sclerosis: The initial diagnosis, the diagnosis of difficult symptoms and the diagnosis of gait disorders. A case study format will be used to better understand similarities and differences between MS and MS mimics as well as to better identify MS symptoms.
    Level: Advanced
  8. John Whitaker Research Track
    Michael Racke, MD
The year’s John Whitaker Research Track will focus on B cells in MS and demyelinating disorders.
    Level: Advanced
