DVD Description:
This program was presented at the 20th Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers (CMSC) Conference held at Scottsdale, Arizona on May 31-June 3, 2006.

In this roundtable, moderated by Dr. Norman Kachuck, the latest long-term data on the FDA-approved modifying therapies will be presented and discussed. Dr. Guy Buckle will cover Interferon Beta-1B (Betaseron), Dr. Frederick Munschauer will deal with Interferon Beta-1A (Avonex), Dr. Mark Freedman will discuss the other Interferon Beta-1A (Rebif) and Dr. Robert Lisak will address Glatiramer Acetate Therapy (Copaxone).


Speakers Information:
Norman Kachuck, MD
Norman Kachuck, M.D., is associate professor of clinical neurology, co-director of the Neuroimmunology Service of the Department of Neurology, and director of the USC Multiple Sclerosis Research Group. He earned his medical degree and completed his training at USC. He also holds a bachelor of arts in musical composition and performance from UC San Diego.

Dr. Kachuck's clinical interests include multiple sclerosis (MS), immunomodulation, and the nervous system. He is the Director of the MS Comprehensive Care Center at USC University Hospital and is involved in clinical trials with new MS medications.

Guy Buckle, MD
Dr. Guy Buckle is a professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School and the director of MS Clinical Care for Partners Multiple Sclerosis Center, Brigham and Women’s and Massachusetts General Hospitals. He earned his medical degree at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, MA. He also holds a bachelors and masters degree in music and composition.

Dr. Buckle’s clinical interests include multiple sclerosis (MS), neuroimmunology, neurovirology and neuroimaging.

Frederick Munschauer, MD
Dr. Munschauer is a board-certified specialist in neurology and internal medicine with a subspecialty in critical care. He is the Irvin & Rosemary Smith Professor and Chair, Department of Neurology, of the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, and he serves as Chairman of the Department of Neurology, as well as Chief of The Jacobs Neurological Institute of Kaleida Health, Buffalo, New York.

Dr. Munschauer received his medical degree from McGill University, Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and completed an Internship and Residency in Internal medicine and a Residency in Neurology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Maryland, USA. He also completed a Fellowship in Neurological and Neurosurgical Intensive Care at The National Hospital for Nervous Disease, London, UK. Dr. Munschauer is a member of the American Academy of Neurology, the American Heart Association, the American Medical Association, the American Society of Neuroimaging, and the Society of Critical Care Medicine. He serves as a Board Member of the Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers, and has recently been nominated to serve on the National Board of Directors for the year 2007 for the National MS Society.

Dr. Munschauer has researched extensively in the use of interferon-b1a (IFN-b1a) as treatment for relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (MS) and was coinvestigator of phase III clinical trials and the CHAMPS study. His publications include the phase III clinical trial results, as well as the rationale for early treatment of MS with IFN-b1a, and managing side effects of IFN-b1a in patients. Dr. Munschauer lectures nationally and internationally on the use of IFN-b1a in patients with MS and is considered one of the leaders in the field of MS treatment.

Mark Freedman, MD
Dr. Mark Steven Freedman is Professor of Medicine (Neurology) at the University of Ottawa and Director of the Multiple Sclerosis Research Unit at the Ottawa Hospital, General Campus.

He received his Medical Degree from the University of Toronto and received postgraduate neurology specialist training at Queen Square in London, England, University of Toronto and the Montreal Neurological Institute. Dr. Freedman is a “Fellow” of both the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC), the American Academy of Neurology (FAAN) and the College of Specialists of Quebec (CSPQ).

For more than 20 years, Dr. Freedman has been actively involved in the management of patients with multiple sclerosis. His major research focus has been in basic and clinical Neuroimmunology. He also has been the principal investigator on numerous clinical trials with new agents in multiple sclerosis as well as being active on steering committees that help design new clinical trials.

Dr. Freedman has published over 100 articles, book chapters and abstracts and has given hundreds of invited lectures and presentations, both on a national and international level.

Robert Lisak, MD
Robert P Lisak, MD is Parker Webber Chair of Neurology, Professor and Chair of Neurology and Professor of Immunology and Microbiology at Wayne State University as well as Neurologist-in-Chief at the Detroit Medical Center and Chief of Neurology at Harper University Hospital. He received his BA from New York University and his MD from Columbia University. Dr Lisak trained in Internal Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine affiliated hospitals (Montefiore Hospital and Bronx Municipal Hospital Center) and in both Neurology and Allergy and Immunology at the University of Pennsylvania. He also trained in neurochemistry and neuroimmunology at the National Institute of Mental Health in Bethesda, MD and was a Fulbright Scholar at the University of London. Dr Lisak was a member of the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania from 1972 until 1987, including serving as Vice-Chair of Neurology, when he was appointed to his current positions at Wayne State University and the Detroit Medical Center. He has served on multiple committees and task forces for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, the American Neurological Association, the American Academy of Neurology and the International Society of Neuroimmunology. Dr Lisak has served or serves on the editorial board of many scholarly journals including the Annals of Neurology, Neurology, the Journal of Neuroimmunology and Clinical Neuropharmacology and is currently the Editor of the Journal of Neurological Sciences. He is the author or co-author of 197 peer-reviewed articles, 123 reviews, chapters, signed editorials and books and 221 published abstracts. He has been an invited speaker at meetings and institutions on multiple occasions in the United States as well as many foreign countries. His current multiple sclerosis related research centers on molecular biologic studies on the effects of cytokines on glial cells as well as clinical research including clinical trials.
