Editorial Review
by: Susan Goodman, MA, RD, CDE

In the author"s words "This handbook was compiled to meet the   needs of health care professionals. It was designed as an aid in the safe integration   of herbal supplements with pharmaceuticals in patient care. The author"s goal   was to provide this aid in a format which could be readily consulted in the   clinical setting, thus a book which readily fits in a lab coat pocket."

This second edition, published in 2002, is 709 pages, is spiral bound, and contains   over 930 references. In addition to herb-drug interactions, it includes sections   on drugs that may alter the effects of herbs; herbs that decrease absorption   of drugs; herbs generally recognized as safe; common herb-drug interactions   by drug class; herbs which may have adverse effects; counseling patients on   dietary supplements; internet resources; herbs containing vitamin K, potassium   and phosporus. Information presented for each herb listed includes uses, contraindications,   safety, adverse reactions and drug interactions.

The author encourages health care providers and patients to have open dialogue   regarding supplement use. She points out that herbs can have positive as well   as negative benefits. She wisely cautions against using the handbook as a prescribing   manual. She also states that some citations may offer conflicting evidence,   leaving cocnlusions up to the reader. She points out that at the present time   the dietary supplement industry in the United States is not well regulated and   that labels do not always accurately reflect supplement contents.

This handbook contains a wealth of information, is well researched, well organized,   quite comprehensive and very thorough. The author also posts updates, with references,   on her web page http://www.herbdrug.org.   The book can be purchsed for $24.95 from FOOD-MEDICATION INTERACTIONS
