Review by June Halper, MSN, APN-C, MSCN, FAAN:
The book published in the UK is an excellent resource for patients and their families. First published in 2000, the second edition has now been released after updating. This reviewer found it to be very comprehensive with a wide range of topics.

Written in a question and answer format, topics range from an overview of the format of the book, to a definition of MS and its epidemiology and diagnosis, to treatments, symptomatic management, and day to day issues such as living with MS, relationships, family and resources. It is very well written by a team of knowledgeable healthcare professionals. The questions are down to earth and simply written and the answers are similarly written in easy to understand terminology. For example, Why do I need so many different tests? is answered in a conversational tone. The reader feels very included in the dialogue, one that a person could have very easily with a supportive healthcare professional.

There is an excellent section on topics such as insurance, driving, exercise and a focus on complementary alternatives with a realistic appraisal of risks versus potential benefits. Since the book is written in the United Kingdom, some references are only relevant for that country but the remainder of the books topics are universal in terms of rehabilitation, disease modification, symptomatic management, and psychosocial implications of MS.

The glossary is very well done and extremely comprehensive. Resource lists are only relevant for UK residents although this book could easily be utilized by many countries merely by listing those resources for other areas of the world.

This reviewer finds this book well written, sensitively done, and a good reference for patients, families, and healthcare professionals interested in MS. It is a practical guide for self-management of MS and I would recommend that if possible, our web project visitors obtain and read it if possible.
