What Nurses Know…Multiple Sclerosis is one in a series of books on various health issues and diseases. They are based on the premise that patients rely on nurses for information and answers to their questions. In this book, the author is a seasoned MS nurse who has been caring for patients with MS and answering their questions for 25 years. Her wealth of knowledge is evident and people reading this book will have access to her patient friendly information.

While there are many resources out there for people newly diagnosed with MS or who are facing new challenges with their MS, this resource is clearly written from the perspective of a direct interaction between nurse and patients and their families. It is easy to read, has a table of contents that allows the reader to pick and choose subjects as well as an index. Throughout the book are call out boxes What nurses know… that provide quick access to pearls of information that will draw the reader’s eye and enhance information and learning. The author has provided a resource guide for further learning and a glossary of terms for increased explanation.

From this reviewer’s perspective, our awareness of health care literacy tells us that people learn differently and start at different levels of knowledge and understanding. Having resources available for all levels is crucial. This book has a clear niche as a tool for our patients to learn about multiple sclerosis in a clear, friendly, non-threatening and hopeful way.
